He was the longest-serving leader at this location. He held this job during two different times. He first led the camp from May 1940 to November 1943. He returned to lead it again in May 1944. He stayed in charge until January 1945. His role was part of a very dark time in history. He helped carry out a plan to kill many Jewish people.

Höss worked to make the camp more efficient. He wanted to do things differently than other camps. He helped expand the facility into a very large area. This area was known as Auschwitz-Birkenau.

The camp complex included three main parts. These were Auschwitz I, Auschwitz II-Birkenau, and Auschwitz III-Monowitz. Many smaller camps were also part of this system. He used a pesticide called Zyklon B in gas chambers. This method helped kill over a million people. This was a terrible part of his work.

Höss was born in Baden-Baden in 1901. He grew up in a strict Catholic family. His father, Franz Xaver Höss, was a former army officer.

As a young man, Höss joined the military. He fought in World War I when he was very young. He served in places like Baghdad and Palestine. He even became a non-commissioned officer at age 17. Later, he joined the Nazi Party in 1922. He also joined the SS in 1934. He worked under leaders like Heinrich Himmler.

During his life, Höss had many different roles. He worked at a farm in Sallentin. He also worked in a prison in Brandenburg. He married a woman named Hedwig Hensel in 1929. They had five children together.

One of his daughters, Annegret, was born at Auschwitz in 1943. His career in the SS led him to many camps. He served at Dachau and Sachsenhausen before Auschwitz. At Sachsenhausen, he led a firing squad in 1939. He was known for being very disciplined and strict. This discipline guided his actions in the camps.

History remembers Rudolf Höss for his crimes against humanity. After World War II ended, he tried to hide. He lived under a false name to stay safe. The British eventually found him. They turned him over to the Polish authorities. A court in Poland held a trial for him. They called it the Supreme National Tribunal. He was convicted of war crimes. This means he was responsible for the deaths at Auschwitz. He was executed in April 1947. His life is a part of how we study the Holocaust.
