Franz Stangl was an Austrian police officer during a very dark time in history. He was born in 1908 in a place called Altmünster. As a young man, he learned to play the zither to help his family. He also worked as a master weaver for a time. Later, he wanted a more stable job. He moved to Innsbruck in 1930 to join the police. He joined the Nazi Party in 1931. He later claimed he only joined to avoid being arrested.

During World War II, Stangl worked for the Nazi government in several roles. First, he worked for the T-4 program. This was a secret program that killed people with disabilities. He worked at the Hartheim and Bernburg centers. In 1942, he was moved to work on Operation Reinhard. This was a plan to kill many Jewish people. Stangl was a very organized manager. He was good at making sure tasks were completed on time.

Stangl became the leader of two death camps. The first was Sobibor, which he ran from April to August 1942. He was the first commandant there. He helped make the camp run more quickly. After that, he was sent to lead the Treblinka camp in September 1942. He wanted the camp to look tidy. He even ordered paths to be paved and flowers to be planted. Prisoners called him the "White Death" because he wore a white coat.

At Treblinka, Stangl oversaw many terrible things. He helped build new, larger gas chambers. These rooms could kill thousands of people every day. Stangl said he did not feel hatred toward the people. Instead, he viewed them as "cargo" or objects. He said he enjoyed his job because it was his profession. It is believed that one million people were killed because of his work. He was a highly efficient but very cruel administrator.

After the war ended, Stangl tried to hide. He escaped to Italy in 1948. A man named Bishop Alois Hudal helped him find a way out. Stangl lived in Syria for three years. Then, he moved to Brazil in 1951. He worked at a Volkswagen factory there. He lived there for many years before he was caught. In 1967, he was arrested and sent to West Germany. A court found him guilty of mass murder. He died in prison in 1971.
