Franz Stangl was an Austrian police officer.

He joined the Nazi Party in 1931. During World War II, he worked for the Nazi government. He helped run a program called T-4. This program killed people with disabilities.

Stangl then became a leader at two death camps. These were called Sobibor and Treblinka. He was the commandant, or the person in charge. He managed how the camps worked.

At Treblinka, he built larger gas chambers. These rooms were used to kill many people every day. Stangl said he viewed the people as cargo instead of humans.

After the war ended, Stangl fled. He used a special path to leave Europe. He lived in Syria and then moved to Brazil. He worked at a Volkswagen car factory.

In 1967, he was arrested. He was sent to West Germany to face a trial. A court found him guilty of mass murder. He was sentenced to life in prison. He died of heart failure six months later.
