In his youth, he served on ships during World War I. He even commanded a submarine. After the war, he chose a new path. He studied to become a Lutheran pastor.

At first, Niemöller supported the Nazi party. He believed they would help his country. However, he soon disagreed with their rules. He fought against laws that treated Jewish people poorly. Because of this, he helped start the Confessing Church. This was a group that stood against Nazi control of churches.

The Nazis arrested him for his beliefs. He was held in concentration camps from 1938 to 1945. He narrowly escaped death while in prison.

After the war, Niemöller felt deep regret. He realized he had not done enough to help others. He traveled the world to teach about human rights. He also became a leader in the peace movement. He worked hard to stop wars and nuclear weapons. He wanted to help make the world a safer place for everyone.
