Life at the Płaszów camp was very hard and scary for the inmates. Göth lived in a comfortable villa near the camp grounds. He often watched the prisoners from his office window. If he saw someone moving too slowly, he might shoot them. He also used his two dogs to attack the people in the camp. Some prisoners said that seeing Göth felt like seeing death itself.

In February 1943, Göth began overseeing the construction of the Płaszów camp. The camp was built on two old Jewish cemeteries using slave labor. At its busiest time in 1944, the camp held 25,000 permanent inmates. Many more people, about 150,000, passed through the camp as it served as a transit site. A large hill called Hujowa Górka was used as a site for mass killings. It is believed that 8,000 to 12,000 people were murdered there.

After the war ended, the people who had been hurt by the Nazis wanted justice. Göth was caught and put on trial by the Supreme National Tribunal of Poland. The court found him guilty of ordering the death of many groups of people. He was also the first person convicted of personally killing and torturing people at a war crimes trial. He was executed by hanging in September 1946. His life is often studied to remember the history of the Holocaust.
