Sir Nicholas Winton was a British stockbroker who became a hero. He was born in London in 1909 to Jewish parents. His family had moved to Britain from Germany. Winton was a successful man who enjoyed fencing. He even played for the British team in 1938. However, his life changed when he saw a great need for help. He decided to act when many people were in danger.

In 1938, Winton planned a skiing trip to Switzerland. Instead, he went to Prague to help with refugee work. He saw that Jewish families were in danger from the Nazis. Winton worked with a team of volunteers in a hotel. They worked at a dining room table in Wenceslas Square. They helped organize ways to get children to safety. This group included people like Trevor Chadwick and Beatrice Wellington.

Helping the children was a very hard job. Winton had to make long lists of children in danger. He had to find homes and sponsors for them in Britain. He also had to get permission to cross through the Netherlands. The Dutch government had closed its borders to many refugees. Winton used guarantees from Britain to help the children pass. He eventually found homes for 669 children in Britain.

For nearly 50 years, the world did not know about his work. Winton lived a quiet life and worked in finance. In 1988, his wife found a scrapbook in their attic. This book held the names and addresses of the children. He was invited to a BBC show called That's Life! Many of the children he saved were in the audience. They stood up to thank him during the program.

Many people have honored Winton for his kindness. Queen Elizabeth II knighted him in 2003. He also received the Order of the White Lion from the Czech Republic. A statue of him now stands at the Prague main railway station. This helps people remember the lives he helped save. Winton lived to be 106 years old. His story shows how one person can make a huge difference.
