He was known as a romantic leading man. People loved his charm and his easy, confident humor. He often played characters who were idealists or gentleman adventurers. Even though he was a big star, he only appeared in 19 films. This was because he suffered from chronic asthma. This health issue made his work difficult at times.

Donat worked hard to find his voice as a performer. As a young boy, he had a bad stammer. He took elocution lessons to learn how to speak clearly. He even worked as a secretary to pay for these lessons. He started his career on the stage in 1921. He was only 16 years old when he first acted. He played a character named Lucius in a play by Shakespeare. Later, he joined a famous group of actors led by Sir Frank Benson. He spent four years traveling and performing with them.

His path to movie stardom was quite interesting. In the early 1930s, people called him "screen test Donat." This was because he had many unsuccessful auditions for film producers. However, a producer named Irving Thalberg eventually spotted him on a London stage. Donat's big break came with the director Alexander Korda. Korda once said Donat had the most natural laugh he had ever heard. This led to his first big success in the film The Private Life of Henry VIII. This movie became a huge success all over the world.

Donat played many famous roles in different countries.
