A hangman is a person who carries out a death sentence. This was a very serious job in the past. Albert worked in this role for 25 years. He carried out between 435 and 600 executions during his career. He took this work very seriously. He even said the job felt "sacred" to him.

First, he would arrive a day early. He would look at the prisoner through a small hole in the door. He needed to see how the person was built. Then, he would test his equipment. He used a heavy sack that weighed about the same as the prisoner. He used a special table to calculate how far the person would drop. He wanted to make sure the process was quick. He aimed to finish everything in 12 seconds or less.

Albert came from a family of executioners.

This included officials from the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp. He even worked in Germany to carry out these tasks.

Albert retired from his job in 1956. This happened after a dispute with a sheriff about his pay. After he stopped being a hangman, he did other things. He ran a pub in Lancashire for many years.
