Amelia Dyer was a woman living in Victorian England who became known for terrible crimes.

She was born in 1837 in a small village called Pyle Marsh. As a young woman, she trained to be a nurse. After her first husband died in 1869, she needed a way to earn money. She began a practice called "baby farming." This was when people took in babies from mothers who could not care for them. Mothers would pay money to have their children looked after. Dyer promised these mothers that she would provide a safe and loving home.

However, Dyer was not the kind person she claimed to be. At first, many children died in her care because of neglect. She was even sent to prison for six months for this neglect. After she left prison, her actions became much more direct and violent. Instead of just being careless, she began to murder the infants she took in. She often used white edging tape to strangle the children. This allowed her to keep all the money the mothers had paid her. She would then hide the bodies to avoid being caught by the police.

To stay hidden, Dyer moved to many different towns and cities. She used different names, which are called aliases, to trick new people. She even recruited an older woman named Jane Smith to help her. They worked together to look like a caring mother and daughter. This made it easier to convince new mothers to trust them. In 1896, she was living in a place called Reading. She thought she could keep her secrets forever by moving and changing her identity.

Her crimes finally came to an end because of a mistake. In March 1896, a package was found in the River Thames. This package contained the body of a baby girl named Helena Fry. A detective named Constable Anderson found a label that led him to Dyer. The police watched her house and eventually arrested her on 4 April 1896. They found many clues in her home, such as tape and letters. They also found more bodies in the river. One of her victims was a baby girl named Doris Marmon.

Dyer was found guilty of murder and was hanged on 10 June 1896. It is believed she was responsible for as many as 400 deaths. Her crimes had a huge impact on how the world works today. Because of what she did, the government made much stricter laws. These laws were made to protect children and make sure adoptions were safe. Her case also helped a group called the NSPCC grow much stronger. This group works very hard to keep children safe from harm.
