Aileen Wuornos was an American woman whose life was marked by many hard events. She was born on February 29, 1956, in Rochester, Michigan. Her early years were very difficult and full of pain. Her mother, Diane, was only 16 when Aileen was born. Her father, Leo Pittman, was never part of her life. He was sent to prison for a serious crime and died there in 1969. Aileen lived with her grandparents after her mother left her. She said her grandfather treated her very badly. By the age of 11, she was already facing many struggles to survive.

As she grew up, Aileen moved through many different places. In 1976, she traveled to Florida and married a man named Lewis Gratz Fell. The marriage lasted only nine weeks. She also had many run-ins with the law during her young adult years. She was arrested for things like drunk driving and robbery. In 1986, she met a woman named Tyria Moore. They moved in together in Daytona Beach. Aileen worked as a prostitute to support them both. This was a very dangerous way to live.

Between 1989 and 1990, a series of terrible crimes took place. Aileen killed seven men who were motorists along Florida highways. These men were between the ages of 40 and 65. The victims included people like Richard Mallory and David Spears. Aileen first claimed she killed them in self-defense. She said the men had tried to rape her. However, she later stopped using this defense in court. Her actions caused a great deal of sadness for many families.

Police eventually found the clues they needed to catch her. In July 1990, Aileen and Tyria were involved in a car crash. A witness saw them and gave a description to the police. Investigators also found fingerprints on a receipt from a pawnshop. These prints matched a victim's belongings. On January 9, 1991, police arrested Aileen at a place called The Last Resort.

To help the police, Tyria Moore spoke with Aileen on the phone. Aileen then confessed to the murders on January 16, 1991.

At her trial in 1992, the facts of her life were shared. Doctors testified that Aileen had certain mental health disorders. She was convicted of the murder of Richard Mallory. She also pleaded no contest to other murders to "get right with God." Aileen was sentenced to death and spent ten years on death row. She was executed in 2002. Her life story was later turned into a movie called Monster. In that film, the actress Charlize Theron won an Academy Award for her role. Her story remains a well-known part of American history.
