Charles Raymond Starkweather was a man who committed many violent crimes. He was born in Lincoln, Nebraska, in 1938. He was the fourth of seven children in a working-class family. His father worked as a carpenter but often lacked work. His mother worked as a waitress to help pay for things.

During his school years, Starkweather felt very angry. He said that other students teased him for his speech. He also had a birth defect that made his legs look different. He found that he was good at physical education. He used sports as a way to deal with his rage. Later, he began to bully other people instead.

Starkweather's life changed as he became a troubled teenager. In 1956, he met a fourteen-year-old girl named Caril Ann Fugate. He dropped out of high school during his senior year. He took a job at a newspaper warehouse to be near her. After a car crash involving his father's car, he was kicked out of his home. He then worked as a garbage collector.

Between November 1957 and January 1958, Starkweather killed eleven people. These crimes happened in Nebraska and Wyoming. Most of these deaths occurred in just a few days in January 1958.

He was accompanied by Caril Ann Fugate during much of this time. Starkweather claimed she helped him with the crimes. Fugate said that he held her hostage. She claimed he threatened to kill her family if she did not help. The crimes caused a huge amount of fear in the public.

Law enforcement worked hard to find the pair. The Nebraska National Guard was even called to help. After many sightings, the police finally caught them in Wyoming. This happened on January 29, 1958, near Douglas.
