Stanley Tookie Williams was a man who lived a very complicated life. He was born on December 29, 1953, in New Orleans, Louisiana. When he was only one year old, his father left the family. In 1959, he moved to the South Central area of Los Angeles with his mother. As a young boy, he often stayed on the streets while his mother worked many jobs. He became known as a very tough street fighter in his neighborhood.

In the late 1960s, many small groups of young people formed in South Central. Some groups joined the Black Panther Party to protect people from unfair treatment by police. Williams did not like the violent gangs that began to form during this time. However, his own reputation for fighting helped him earn respect from other gangsters. At age fifteen, he joined a small group of friends on the West Side. By the time he was seventeen, he was physically very large and strong.

In 1971, Williams met a man named Raymond Washington at a high school. They decided to join their influence to start a large gang called the Crips. Williams said his goal was to protect his community from other gangs. He wanted to create a force to help people facing racism and corruption. This group quickly grew by bringing many smaller groups into the Crips. This growth led to the formation of a rival group known as the Bloods.

Williams lived a strange and double life during the 1970s. He worked as a counselor for young people in Compton. At the same time, he was a major leader for the Crips gang. He even studied sociology at Compton College during his working hours. In 1976, he was shot in the legs during a drive-by shooting. He had to work very hard in physical therapy to walk again. During this time, he also struggled with using drugs like PCP.

His life changed forever when he was arrested in 1979. Prosecutors said he was involved in two robberies that led to four murders. In 1981, a court found him guilty of these crimes. He spent over twenty years on death row in California. He was eventually executed by lethal injection in 2005. His trial and his case caused many people to debate the death penalty. People continue to discuss his life and the choices he made.
