The Crips are a large alliance of street gangs. They are mostly made up of African-American men. Most of these groups are based in Southern California. They are known as one of the largest and most violent gang associations in the United States.

These groups are often called "sets." A set is a smaller, local group that belongs to the larger alliance. Some sets work together, but many fight with one another. This makes the group a loose network rather than one single organization.

Members use certain signs and words to show they belong. Many Crips wear blue clothing. This tradition began around 1973. It started after a member named Curtis "Buddha" Morrow was killed. His friends wore blue to honor him.

They also use special ways of writing. For example, they might change how they spell words. They often avoid certain letters like "b" or "ck." This is done to show disrespect to their rivals. They might also use graffiti to mark their territory.

This group began in Los Angeles in 1969. Two men named Raymond Washington and Stanley "Tookie" Williams started it. They wanted to unite local gangs from the east and west sides of South Central Los Angeles. They did this to battle other neighboring gangs. Most members at the start were about 17 years old. The name "Crips" may have come from the word "Cribs." Some say this name was chosen because the members were very young. Others say it came from the word "cripples."

Over many years, the Crips grew very large. In 1978, there were 45 different sets in Los Angeles. By 1999, there were at least 600 sets. In 2008, it was estimated there were 30,000 to 35,000 members. By 2015, the number of sets grew to about 800. These groups are active in 221 cities and 41 U.S. states. They have even moved into Canadian cities like Montreal and Toronto. Much of this growth happened in the 1980s during the boom of crack cocaine.

The Crips have a very long and bitter rivalry with a group called the Bloods. This conflict started in the 1960s and 1970s. The Bloods formed to help people protect themselves from the Crips. Because of this rivalry, many crimes happened in Southern Los Angeles. The Crips also fight with other Crip sets. For example, the Rollin' 60s Neighborhood Crips and the 83 Gangster Crips have been rivals since 1979. These fights can cause many different groups to pick sides in large wars.
