N.W.A was a very influential hip-hop group from America.

They formed in Compton, California, in 1987. Many people call them one of the greatest acts in hip-hop history. They were famous for a style called gangsta rap. However, the members often called their own music "reality rap." This is because they told stories about their own lives. Their songs focused on real issues like racism and policing.

This music helped many young people become more aware of social problems.

The group grew through several different members over time. Eazy-E helped assemble the original lineup in early 1987. This first group included Arabian Prince, Dr. Dre, Eazy-E, and Ice Cube.

DJ Yella joined the group shortly after the start. Later, in mid-1988, MC Ren was added as the sixth member. Making the music was a team effort with different roles. Dr. Dre and DJ Yella worked as producers to make the beats. Ice Cube, MC Ren, and The D.O.C. wrote many of the lyrics.

History shows that the group faced many hard jobs. Their music used very strong and explicit language. Because of this, many mainstream radio stations refused to play them.

Even the FBI sent a letter to their record company. The letter said that advocating violence was wrong. Some police officers even refused to provide security for their concerts. Despite these many problems, their music became a huge success. They sold over ten million units in the United States alone.

There were many important releases during their years together. Their first release was a compilation album called N.W.A. and the Posse in 1987. In 1989, they released their famous debut studio album, Straight Outta Compton. This album helped start a new era of rap music. In 1991, they released their second album, Efil4zaggin. This was the first hardcore rap album to reach number one on the Billboard 200 charts.

This album also helped start the G-funk musical style.

N.W.A changed how music sounded and who listened to it. They were the first to open rap music to a white American audience. This helped rap music spread quickly across the whole country. After the group disbanded, many members became famous solo artists. Eazy-E, Ice Cube, MC Ren, and Dr. Dre all had successful solo careers. The group was later inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2016. In 2024, they received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award for their work.
