N.W.A was a highly influential American hip-hop group formed in Compton, California, in 1987.

They are widely considered one of the most significant acts in hip-hop history. While many people categorize their music as gangsta rap, the members often referred to their work as "reality rap." This term reflected their goal of telling stories about their own lives and environments. Their music focused on social commentary regarding racism and excessive policing. Through these lyrics, they addressed the social burdens faced by urban youth. This approach helped increase political awareness among many young Americans.

The group's musical production was a collaborative process involving specific roles. Dr. Dre and DJ Yella served as producers to compose the beats. The lyrics were largely written by Ice Cube, MC Ren, and The D.O.C.

The original 1987 lineup included Arabian Prince, Dr. Dre, Eazy-E, and Ice Cube. DJ Yella joined shortly after the group's formation. In mid-1988, MC Ren was recruited as the sixth member. This team worked together to create a sound that was revolutionary for the genre.

N.W.A's career was marked by significant controversy and tension with authorities. Their music used explicit lyrics that some critics viewed as misogynistic or homophobic. The group also faced criticism for the glorification of crime and drugs in their songs. Because of this, many mainstream American radio stations banned their music.

Even the FBI sent a letter to their distributor, Priority Records. The assistant director of the FBI, Milt Ahlerich, stated that advocating violence was wrong. Despite these challenges, the group's notoriety actually helped increase their mass appeal.

The group's discography includes several landmark releases that changed the music industry. Their first release was the 1987 compilation album, N.W.A. and the Posse. This was followed by their debut studio album, Straight Outta Compton, in 1989. This album helped launch a new era of hardcore rap. In 1991, they released Efil4zaggin, which was the first hardcore rap album to reach number one on the Billboard 200 sales charts. This album also introduced the G-funk style, which featured a midtempo, synthesizer-based sound. This style eventually dominated hip-hop scenes on both the West and East Coasts.

Internal conflicts eventually led to the group's dissolution. Arabian Prince left the group in January 1989 due to disagreements regarding how funds were managed. Ice Cube departed in December 1989 following disputes over royalties. Ice Cube had written nearly half of the lyrics on Straight Outta Compton and felt his profits were unfair.

His departure led to tension, with the remaining members releasing songs that included "diss" tracks aimed at him. The group continued as a four-piece until they disbanded shortly after the release of Niggaz4Life in 1991.

Despite the group's end, the individual members achieved massive success. Eazy-E, Ice Cube, MC Ren, and Dr. Dre all became platinum-selling solo artists during the 1990s. Eazy-E passed away from AIDS on March 26, 1995. The surviving members occasionally reunited, including a period from 1999 to 2001. However, a planned third album was abandoned due to legal issues regarding the rights to the N.W.A name. The group's commercial impact was immense, selling over ten million units in the United States alone.

N.W.A's legacy is defined by their role in shaping the evolution of rap. They are credited with being the first to open the genre to a white American audience. This helped the rapid spread of rap music across the entire American population. Their cultural importance has been recognized by many major institutions. Rolling Stone ranked them at number 83 on its list of the "100 Greatest Artists of All Time." In 2016, they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. They also received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2024.
