He was born on June 15, 1969. His father worked as a machinist and a UCLA groundskeeper. His mother worked as a hospital clerk and a custodian. In ninth grade, he began writing rap lyrics during a typewriting class. His stage name came from a threat by his older brother. His brother joked about slamming him into a freezer and pulling him out like an ice cube.

His early career involved several different musical groups. In 1986, at age 16, he joined a trio called C.I.A. He also worked with Dr. Dre in the group World Class Wreckin' Cru. Cube helped write the hit song "Cabbage Patch" for that group. In 1987, he joined the group N.W.A. with members Eazy-E and Dr. Dre.

As the lead rapper, he wrote most of the lyrics for the 1989 album *Straight Outta Compton*. This album was a landmark for the hip-hop genre.

In late 1989, Ice Cube left N.W.A. This departure was caused by a monetary dispute. He questioned the group's management by Jerry Heller. He also had concerns regarding his own compensation. He received a total of $32,000 for his work on earlier projects.

After leaving, he embarked on a highly successful solo career. He released eleven albums during his career. Seven of these albums reached the top 10 on the U.S. Billboard 200 chart.

His solo albums explored complex socio-political themes. *AmeriKKKa's Most Wanted* was released in 1990. It featured an affirmation of black nationalism and the ideology of black struggle. His second album, *Death Certificate*, was released in 1991. This album was split into two distinct themes. The "Death Side" presented a vision of the present. The "Life Side" presented a vision of a necessary future.
