Straight Outta Compton is a famous rap album by the group N.W.A.

It was released on January 25, 1989. The music tells raw stories about life in Compton, California. These songs talk about street life and being angry at the police. Many people call this style "gangsta rap." The album helped this style become a huge part of hip-hop. It is now seen as one of the most important works in music history.

Making the music was a big job for the group.

Dr. Dre, DJ Yella, and Arabian Prince were the producers. They recorded the songs at Audio Achievements Studio in Torrance. It cost about $12,000 to make the whole album. They used a drum machine called a Roland TR-808 for the beats. They also added horn sounds, guitar parts, and turntable scratches. Dr. Dre said he put it together in just six weeks.

Before this album, most rap music came from New York City.

In Los Angeles, music was often about dancing and parties. This was called electro rap or "funk hop." But N.W.A. changed things by focusing on lyrics. Eric Wright started a label called Ruthless Records in 1987. He brought together members like Dr. Dre and Ice Cube. They worked together to create a new, harder sound for the West Coast.

Writing the words was also a team effort.

Ice Cube, MC Ren, and Eazy-E wrote many of the lyrics. A rapper named The D.O.C. also helped write them. One song, "Fuck tha Police," was very controversial. It was inspired by a time when police treated the group poorly. This song even caused the FBI to send a warning letter. Despite this, the album became a massive hit. It was the first gangsta rap album to earn platinum certification. This means it sold over one million copies.

Today, we still remember this album for its huge impact.

It reached number nine on the Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop charts. In 2016, it became the first rap album in the Grammy Hall of Fame. It was also added to the Library of Congress National Recording Registry. This is a special place for music that is culturally significant. A movie called Straight Outta Compton was even made about the group. This helped many new people discover their music years later.
