Gangsta rap

arts Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Gangsta rap is a special style of hip-hop music. It was also called reality rap in its early days. This music tells stories about life in big cities. It shares the values and experiences of street hustlers and urban gangs. Many songs talk about the hard or unpleasant parts of the world.

This music works by using lyrics to paint a picture of city life. Some artists use their songs to show the truth of life in American ghettos. Others use the music to voice anger about police brutality or social unfairness. Some songs focus on a slow, easy rhythm that is good for dancing. This style often uses samples, which are sounds taken from older funk bands.

In the late 1980s, several pioneers helped start this genre. Schoolly D from Philadelphia is often called the first gangsta rapper. He released the song "P.S.K." in 1985, which many see as the first gangsta rap song. Ice-T was also a major early artist. He was inspired by Schoolly D and released "6 in the Mornin'" in 1986.

Many famous groups and artists helped the music grow. N.W.A released the huge album "Straight Outta Compton" in 1989. This made West Coast hip-hop a major force that rivaled New York City. In 1992, Dr. Dre released "The Chronic." This album helped make a style called G-funk very popular. G-funk is a slow style of hip-hop that uses sounds from Parliament and Funkadelic.

People have many different feelings about this music. Some critics say the lyrics promote bad behavior like crime. They have even called the music a "malignant tumor" during times of crisis. However, many defenders say the music is just art. They believe it shows real life rather than telling people to act that way. They also say critics might have racial bias against the music.
