Creating this music involves mixing many different sounds together. It uses elements from dancehall, hip hop, and Caribbean music. Artists often use a style called toasting or rapping. Some performers use rap-singing to blend melodies with spoken words. In the past, people made music in simple places like carports. They used second-hand recording equipment to make their tracks.

The history of reggaeton begins in Panama City during the late 1980s. It grew from Jamaican reggae music brought by workers building the Panama Canal. These workers came from places like Jamaica and Barbados. Later, the music moved to Puerto Rico and became very popular there. In those early years, people called it "underground" music. It was called that because it spread through unofficial places and small networks.

There are different stories about how the name reggaeton started. Some say Michael Ellis created the term by adding a suffix to make a word big. Others believe Daddy Yankee used the word in 1994 while freestyling. Another idea is that DJ Erick used it in 1995 for an album. This album combined the words reggae and marathon. In Puerto Rico, the music faced hard times from the police. Officers once confiscated many tapes from stores in San Juan in 1995.
