It began in Trinidad and Tobago with Afro-Trinidadians. This music is special because it carries deep meaning for its people. It has always been a way to share news and express feelings. Many people use it to speak out against unfair rules. It is a way for a community to stay connected through song.

Making calypso involves many rhythmic and harmonic vocals. In the past, a leader called a griot sang these songs. This role later became known as a chantuelle. Eventually, these singers were called calypsonians.

They often used clever ways to share messages. One way was using double entendre, which is a type of double-speak. This helped them slip songs past people who wanted to stop them. They could talk about big news while using hidden meanings.

Calypso has a long and interesting history. Its roots go back to West African Kaiso music. It also connects to the arrival of French planters in the 18th century. Enslaved Africans used these songs to communicate with each other. They also used the music to mock their masters. After slavery ended in 1834, calypso competitions grew at Carnival. This helped the music become very popular in Trinidad.

Many important recordings helped calypso reach the world. Lovey's String Band recorded a song in 1912 in New York City. In 1914, the chantwell Julian Whiterose made early English recordings. A man named Eduardo de Sá Gomes helped spread the music. In March 1934, he sent Roaring Lion to New York to record. This brought the music into pop culture. Later, the "Banana Boat Song" by Harry Belafonte sold over a million copies.

Calypso has influenced many other types of music you might know. In Jamaica, a style called mento influenced ska and reggae. In Barbados, there is a popular style called spouge. A newer style called soca also emerged in the 1970s. Soca mixes calypso with soul, funk, and Latin music. You can even hear calypso sounds in Disney's "Under the Sea." This song from The Little Mermaid won an Academy Award in 1989.
