Raymond Lee Washington was a man who changed the history of Los Angeles. He was born on August 14, 1953, in Los Angeles, California. He was the youngest of four sons. His parents were Violet Samuel and Reginald Cecil Washington. His parents separated when he was only two years old. He grew up on East 76th Street in South Central.

Washington was known for being a strong fighter. Some neighbors said he was a bully. His mother said he wanted to protect his community. He attended several different schools, including Locke High School and Fairfax High School. In the late 1960s, many new youth gangs began to form in Los Angeles. Washington first joined a gang called The Avenues. Later, in 1969, he organized his own group called the Baby Avenues.

In 1971, Washington made a very important choice. He met a leader named Stanley "Tookie" Williams at Washington Preparatory High School. They decided to join their groups together. They also worked with a leader named Mac Thomas from Compton. This alliance created the Crips. The Crips became the first major African-American street gang in Los Angeles. They grew very quickly across many neighborhoods.

As the Crips grew, other groups felt they needed to protect themselves. A group called the Bloods formed to stay independent. This created a rivalry that led to more violence in the city. In 1974, Washington was convicted of robbery. He was sent to the Deuel Vocational Institution in Tracy for five years. While he was in prison, the Crips changed a lot. The original leadership began to disappear.

Washington was released from prison in 1976. He was surprised to see how much more violent things had become. He wanted the Crips to be one single group again. He also wanted them to make peace with the Bloods. However, he no longer had much influence over the gang. On August 9, 1979, Washington was killed in a drive-by shooting. He was only 25 years old. His death remains an unsolved mystery in Los Angeles history.
