Raymond Washington was a man from Los Angeles. He was born in 1953. In the late 1960s, he started a street gang called the Crips. He first led a small group called the Baby Avenues. In 1971, he met a man named Stanley "Tookie" Williams. They joined their groups together. This made the Crips a very large gang.

Because the Crips grew so big, other groups formed to stay safe. One of these groups was called the Bloods. This led to many fights between the gangs. In 1974, Washington went to prison for robbery. He stayed in prison for five years.

While he was away, the Crips changed. They became many small groups that fought each other. When Washington came home in 1976, he was sad about the violence. He wanted the gangs to stop fighting. He wanted them to make peace with the Bloods. Sadly, Washington was killed in 1979. No one knows who was responsible for his death. His story is a part of the history of Los Angeles.
