He was born in Louisiana in 1942. His family moved to Oakland, California, to find safety.

Newton loved to learn. He taught himself to read by studying old books. He later earned a PhD, which is the highest college degree.

In 1966, Newton and Bobby Seale started the Black Panther Party. They wanted to help Black communities. They made a list of goals called a Ten-Point Program. This list asked for better jobs and houses. It also asked for better schools.

The group started many helpful programs. They gave free breakfast to many children. They also ran medical clinics and schools.

Newton's life had many hard parts. He faced many legal battles and went to prison. In 1967, a fight with police led to the death of an officer. Newton was later tried for this, but the charges were dropped. He died in 1989.
