Eduardo Mondlane was a leader from Mozambique. He was born in 1920. As a boy, he worked as a shepherd. He loved to learn and went to many schools. He studied anthropology. This is the study of how people live.

He went to college in the United States. He earned a PhD. He also worked for the United Nations. Later, he taught at Syracuse University. In 1963, he moved to Tanzania. He wanted to help his home country.

Mondlane helped start a group called FRELIMO. This group wanted Mozambique to be free from Portugal. He was the first president of FRELIMO. In 1964, the group began a war for independence.

Sadly, Mondlane died in 1969. A bomb was sent to him in a package. It exploded and killed him. Many people think the Portuguese were responsible.

His work helped Mozambique become free in 1975. Today, people still honor him. A large university in the capital city has his name. It is called Eduardo Mondlane University.
