Leaders formed the group to fight for the rights of black South Africans.

In 1948, a new government began a system called apartheid. This system used unfair laws to keep people apart based on race. The ANC worked hard to stop these laws. They used strikes and boycotts to show they disagreed.

Later, the government banned the ANC. Many leaders were sent to prison. The group had to move to other countries to stay safe.

In 1994, things changed. South Africa held its first fair election. The ANC won, and Nelson Mandela became President.
