Eduardo Chivambo Mondlane was a Mozambican revolutionary and a professional anthropologist. He is best known as the founder and first leader of FRELIMO. This group was the Mozambican Liberation Front. Mondlane worked to help Mozambique become an independent nation. He spent his life studying human societies and fighting for political change. His leadership helped unite different groups to seek freedom from Portuguese rule.

Mondlane's journey began in 1920 in N'wajahani, Mozambique. He was the fourth of 16 sons born to a Tsonga chief. As a child, he worked as a shepherd until he was 12 years old. He attended several primary schools and a Swiss-Presbyterian school. Later, he studied at Lemana College in South Africa. In 1949, he was expelled from South Africa due to the rise of the Apartheid government. This system of racial segregation forced him to leave the country.

His academic career took him across the world. In 1950, he attended the University of Lisbon in Portugal. He later moved to the United States to study at Oberlin College in Ohio. There, he earned a degree in anthropology and sociology in 1953. He continued his education at Northwestern University in Illinois. In 1960, he earned his PhD. His dissertation focused on "role conflict, reference group, and race." This research looked at how different social groups interact.

Before becoming a revolutionary, Mondlane had a career in international service. In 1957, he worked as a research officer for the United Nations. This job allowed him to travel throughout Africa. In 1960, he became a professor at Syracuse University in New York. He helped build the East African Studies Program there. However, his passion for his home country led him to make a big change. In 1963, he resigned from his teaching post. He moved to Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, to join the liberation struggle.

Mondlane played a vital role in organizing the independence movement. In 1962, he was elected president of FRELIMO. This organization brought together several smaller independentist groups. FRELIMO began a guerrilla war in 1964 to fight for independence. The leadership of the group had different ideas about the future. Mondlane and many in the Central Committee wanted a socialist society. Other leaders only wanted independence without changing social relations. In 1968, the party officially approved the socialist position.

Tragedy struck the movement in 1969. A package containing a bomb was sent to Mondlane at the FRELIMO headquarters. The bomb exploded when he opened it at a friend's house in Tanzania. This event killed him and left the movement in mourning. Many different groups were suspected of being involved in the assassination. Despite his death, the struggle for independence continued. By the early 1970s, FRELIMO's 7,000 guerrilla fighters controlled parts of the countryside. They faced a much larger Portuguese military force of about 60,000 people.

Mondlane's legacy lives on in the nation he helped create. Mozambique finally gained independence on June 25, 1975. This happened after a military coup changed the government in Portugal. His family also stayed involved in Mozambican life. His wife, Janet Rae Johnson, held various government positions. His daughter, Nyeleti Mondlane, served as a minister for youth and sports. Today, the main university in the capital city, Maputo, is named Eduardo Mondlane University. Syracuse University also honors him through a special lecture series.
