He founded and led a group called UNITA. UNITA stands for the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola. Savimbi was a politician and a military leader. His life was defined by his fight for control over his home country. He moved between being a student, a diplomat, and a guerrilla fighter. His actions helped shape the history of Angola during the 20th century.

Savimbi grew up in the Bié Province of Angola. His father, Lote, was a stationmaster on the Benguela railway. His family belonged to the Ovimbundu people. This ethnic group later became Savimbi's largest base of political support. He was a very dedicated student. He attended both Protestant and Roman Catholic schools. At age 24, he received a scholarship to study medicine in Portugal. This education allowed him to meet other students who wanted to resist Portuguese colonial rule.

Savimbi's journey took him across many different countries. After facing pressure from the Portuguese secret police, known as PIDE, he escaped to Switzerland. He studied social sciences and law at different universities. In 1960, he met Holden Roberto in Switzerland. Roberto was a leader in the National Liberation Front of Angola, or FNLA. Savimbi also traveled to Uganda and Kenya. In Kenya, he met leaders like Jomo Kenyatta. These meetings helped convince Savimbi to commit to the cause of Angolan independence.

In the 1960s, Savimbi began organizing resistance movements. He first joined the MPLA Youth. However, the MPLA did not give him the leadership role he wanted. In 1964, he teamed up with the FNLA. That same year, he and Antonio da Costa Fernandes conceived the idea for UNITA. Savimbi traveled to China to seek help. He received military training and promises of weapons there. He returned to Angola in 1966 to start a guerrilla war. A guerrilla war uses small, mobile groups to strike at larger enemies.

Savimbi was a very effective military strategist. He used Maoist tactics, which he learned in China. These tactics involved using multiple military fronts to confuse enemies. Some fronts would attack, while others would pretend to retreat. He also used the rural peasantry for support. He focused heavily on mobilizing the Ovimbundu people. By 1989, UNITA controlled many areas of Angola. They were able to launch attacks near the capital city, Luanda. His military success made leaders in the Soviet Union very concerned.

After Angola gained independence in 1975, a civil war began. This war was part of the global Cold War. The MPLA was supported by the Soviet Union and Cuba. Savimbi changed his political stance to gain new allies. He renounced his Maoist ideas and became an anti-communist.

This shift attracted the attention of the United States. The Reagan administration and the Heritage Foundation supported him. The CIA even provided covert weapons to his fighters. Savimbi met President Ronald Reagan at the White House in 1986.

Savimbi was known for his many talents. He was a highly skilled linguist. He could speak seven languages fluently, including English, French, and Portuguese. He often used Western political philosophy in his speeches.

This helped him connect with international diplomats. However, his enemies saw him differently. They called him a power-hungry warmonger.

He also faced criticism for accusing opponents of witchcraft. His life was a mix of intellectual study and intense military conflict.

In the 1990s, the conflict in Angola continued to be very intense. Savimbi participated in general elections in 1992, but they were unsuccessful. He continued to lead UNITA through years of fighting. His influence remained strong even as the global political landscape changed. Eventually, the long period of conflict came to an end for him. Savimbi was killed in 2002 during a clash with government troops. His leadership left a lasting impact on the political systems of Africa.
