Eduardo Mondlane was a very important leader from Mozambique. He was a man who studied people and worked for change. He was born in 1920 in a place called N'wajahani. His father was a chief of the Tsonga people. As a young boy, Mondlane worked as a shepherd. He went to many different schools to learn. He even studied in South Africa and Portugal.

Later, Mondlane moved to the United States to study more. He went to Oberlin College in Ohio. He also studied at Northwestern University in Illinois. He worked very hard to earn a PhD. This is the highest degree a person can get in college. He studied anthropology and sociology. These subjects help us understand how different groups of people live together.

After finishing his studies, Mondlane had many interesting jobs. He worked for the United Nations. He also taught at Syracuse University in New York. In 1963, he decided to leave his teaching job. He moved to Dar es Salaam in Tanzania. He wanted to help the people in Mozambique gain their freedom.

In 1962, Mondlane became the first president of a group called FRELIMO. This group was made of different smaller groups. They wanted Mozambique to be an independent nation. FRELIMO began a war in 1964 to fight for this goal. Mondlane wanted to create a fair and socialist society. Sadly, Mondlane died in 1969 when a bomb was sent to him in a package.

Even though Mondlane died, his work helped change history. In 1975, Mozambique finally became an independent country. Many people still remember his name today. There is a large school in the capital city named after him. It is called Eduardo Mondlane University. His daughter, Nyeleti Mondlane, also became a leader in the new government.
