He was born on October 22, 1939, in a small village called Malehice. At that time, Mozambique was a colony of Portugal. Chissano was the first black student at a high school in the area. He later went to Portugal to study medicine. His political ideas caused some trouble for him there. Because of this, he moved to France to finish his studies. In 1962, he went to Tanzania to join a political movement. He helped start a group called FRELIMO. This group fought for Mozambique to be an independent country.

Chissano played a big part in making Mozambique free. He helped negotiate an agreement in 1974 called the Lusaka Accord. This agreement helped the country gain independence in 1975. After independence, the first president, Samora Machel, made Chissano the Minister of Foreign Affairs. In 1986, Chissano became the second President of Mozambique. This happened after President Machel's plane crashed in South Africa. Chissano had a very hard job to do. He had to lead a country that was fighting a civil war. He worked to turn the nation into a successful democracy.

Peace was one of Chissano's biggest goals. In 1992, he ended the Mozambican Civil War. He did this by making a peace treaty with rebel forces. The treaty promised no punishments for the rebels. It also gave them half of the jobs in the army. Chissano also used meditation to help his country. In 1992, he learned a technique called Transcendental Meditation. He taught it to many government officials and their families. In 1994, he even asked soldiers and police to meditate twice a day. He believed this brought peace and balance to the land.

Chissano worked hard to help people escape poverty. During his time as leader, almost 3 million people left extreme poverty. This was about 15 percent of all people in Mozambique. He also helped the economy grow by eight percent. Many more children started going to primary school during his presidency. In 2000, a big flood made his work even harder. In 2005, he helped convince the G8 to cancel 22 billion pounds of debt.
