Boudiaf worked hard to organize his people. He helped collect money and store arms for the fight. He even helped prepare groups of fighters. In 1956, things became very difficult for him. French forces took him on a plane during a hijacking. He was kept as a prisoner in France for many years. He was finally released just before Algeria became free in 1962.

After the war, Boudiaf had to leave his home. He lived in a place called Morocco for 27 years. While he was away, he stayed active in politics. He started a group called the PRS to ask for change. He wanted the government to be different. He did not return to Algeria until 1992. The military invited him back to lead a group called the High Council of State.

Boudiaf wanted to make Algeria a better place. He spoke about ending corruption in the government. He wanted to make sure the military did not run everything. Because of these ideas, many people began to like him. He was a leader who wanted real reform. However, his time as a leader was very short. He only held his new position for four months.

Sadly, Boudiaf was killed in June 1992. He was giving a speech in the city of Annaba. A man killed him while he was speaking on television. This event shocked the whole country of Algeria. Tens of thousands of people went to his funeral in Algiers. Many people now call him a martyr. They believe he could have saved the country.
