Ferhat Abbas was a very important leader in Algeria. He helped his country become free and independent. He was born on August 24, 1889, in a village called Taher. His father was a leader named a caid.

Abbas grew up and went to school in places like Constantine. He even served as a sergeant in the French army medical corps. Later, he studied at the University of Algiers. He became a pharmacist, which is a person who prepares medicine. He worked in the town of Sétif and joined local politics there.

At first, Abbas wanted things to be different for Algerian Muslims. He wanted them to have the same rights as people in France. In 1936, he even wrote an article called "I am France." But he soon felt very disappointed. He saw that equality was not happening.

In 1938, he started a group called the Algerian Popular Union. This group wanted equal rights for everyone. They also wanted to keep Algerian culture and language strong. This was the start of his journey toward wanting a free nation.

Abbas changed his ideas many times as he grew older. In 1943, he wrote the Manifesto of the Algerian People. This was a very important paper. It said that the French rule was not right. He asked for a constitution, which is a set of rules for a country. He also wanted a sovereign Algeria.

Because of these ideas, he was sent to prison for one year. In 1946, he formed a new party called the UDMA. He wanted a peaceful way to build an Algerian state with France.

During the Algerian War, Abbas became a famous diplomat. A diplomat is someone who travels to talk to other leaders. He joined a group called the FLN. He traveled to Europe and Latin America to ask for help.

In 1957, he was the FLN delegate to the United Nations. In 1958, he became the president of a temporary government. This government was called the GPRA. He worked hard to find peace between the different sides. He even talked to the Vatican to ask for help with peace.

Algeria finally became independent on July 5, 1962. Abbas helped lead the new National Assembly. He served as its president for a short time. Later, he had some hard times and was placed under house arrest.

Even so, the country gave him a special award called the Medal of Resistance in 1984. Abbas died in his sleep on December 24, 1985. He is buried in the El Alia Cemetery. His life shows how one person's ideas can change a whole nation.
