He was born in Monastir on August 3, 1903. His family was not wealthy, but his father worked hard. Ali Bourguiba wanted his children to have a good education. This helped Habib avoid the military service his brothers faced. Habib grew up around many women in his home.

In the 1930s, he joined politics to help Tunisia. He helped start a group called the Neo Destour in 1934. Because he fought for his country, the French leaders arrested him. He was even sent away to Marseille during World War II. He later moved to Cairo to ask for help from the Arab League.

Leading a nation toward freedom is a very hard job.

Bourguiba returned to Tunisia in 1949 to lead the movement. He tried to talk peacefully with the French government at first. Later, there was armed unrest in the country starting in 1952. Bourguiba was even held on La Galite Island for two years. Eventually, he led talks with French Prime Minister Pierre Mendès France. These talks helped lead to more freedom for the Tunisian people. He returned to Tunis in victory on June 1, 1955.

After Tunisia became independent in 1956, Bourguiba became prime minister.
