Moktar Ould Daddah was a very important leader in Mauritania.

He helped his country become its own nation. He was born in Boutilimit in 1924. Moktar grew up in a family of religious teachers. He studied very hard at special Islamic academies. Later, he went to Paris to study law. He became the first person from Mauritania to earn a university degree. This was a huge step for his people.

Moktar worked to bring many different people together. He wanted to help the White Moors, the Black Moors, and Black Africans live as one.

In 1959, he started a new political party. His party won every seat in the National Assembly. This helped him become the first Prime Minister in 1957. In 1960, France gave Mauritania its independence. Moktar then became the first President of the new country. He held this job for 18 years.

As President, Moktar made big changes to how the government worked. He believed the country was not ready for many different political parties. In 1964, he made a new set of rules called a Constitution. This created a one-party state. Only his party, the Mauritanian People's Party, was allowed to exist. He used a policy called "Islamic socialism." This meant the government took control of many private businesses. He was reelected several times in 1966, 1971, and 1976.

Life became very hard for the people in Mauritania during his rule. A big drought hit the land between 1969 and 1974. Also, the money the country made from selling iron went down.

A war also started in a place called Western Sahara. Mauritania fought a group known as the Polisario Front. This group wanted independence for that land. The war was very difficult for the Mauritanian army. The Polisario Front even attacked important iron mines in Zouerate. This made the country's money problems much worse.

In 1978, the government changed in a sudden way. A group of soldiers led by Mustafa Ould Salek took control. This event is called a military coup.

Moktar had to leave Mauritania and live in France. He lived there in exile for many years. He finally returned home to Mauritania in 2001. He died in Paris in 2003 after being sick for a long time. His body was brought back to be buried in his home country.
