Gnassingbé Eyadéma was a very important leader in Togo.

He served as the third president of the country for many years. He held this position from 1967 until he died in 2005. This long time in office made him a major figure in history. At the time of his death, he was the longest-serving ruler in Africa. His life changed the way Togo was governed for decades.

Eyadéma began his career as a soldier in the French Army.

He joined the army in 1953 after finishing primary school. He fought in two different wars in Indochina and Algeria. In 1962, he returned to his home country of Togo. He was part of a military coup in January 1963. A coup is when the military takes control of a government. He later led a second coup in January 1967.

After the second coup, Eyadéma became the president of Togo.

He also served as the Minister of Defence for many years. He created a single political party called the Rally of the Togolese People. This party was the only legal group allowed to run the country. For a long time, he ruled without any other parties. In 1979, the country adopted a new constitution for civilian rule. However, his party remained the only one in power.

Eyadéma was known for having a very large personality cult.

This means people were encouraged to treat him like a hero. There were bronze statues of him in the capital city, Lomé. He even had a comic book that showed him with super strength. He survived a plane crash near Sarakawa in 1974. He claimed to be the only person to survive that crash. This helped him build an image of being very strong.

In the 1990s, many people in Togo asked for political changes.

They wanted to have elections with many different political parties. Eyadéma faced many challenges and won several elections in 1993, 1998, and 2003. Some people said these elections were not fair or were fraudulent. He died on February 5, 2005, while on a plane. After he passed away, his son Faure Gnassingbé became the new president. This transition was a major event for the nation of Togo.
