He served as the sixth president for thirty years. This makes him the longest-serving president in Chad's history. He was born on June 18, 1952, in a village called Berdoba. His father was a herdsman from the Zaghawa group. Déby studied at many schools in northern Chad. He even went to France to train as a pilot.

He returned to Chad in 1976 with his pilot certificate.

Déby spent much of his early career in the military. He worked under a leader named Hissène Habré. In 1987, Déby helped lead a fight called the Toyota War. This war was fought against forces from Libya. With help from France, his troops used clever tactics. These tactics helped Chad win against the Libyan forces. Later, a disagreement happened between Déby and Habré. Habré accused Déby of planning to take his power. This forced Déby to flee to Libya and then to Sudan.

During his time in office, big changes happened in Chad. In the early 2000s, people found oil in the country. Déby made oil production a main part of the economy. A huge pipeline was built to move the oil. This project was over 1,000 kilometers long. It went from Chad through Cameroon to the sea.

Some people had difficult things to say about Déby's rule. International groups often called him an authoritarian leader. This means they felt he held too much power. They also noted problems like corruption in the government. Many rebels tried to stop his government from ruling. One group called FACT started an offensive in early 2021.
