Bongo was born on December 30, 1935, in a town called Lewai. This town was later renamed Bongoville. He grew up as the youngest of twelve siblings. His family belonged to the Bateke ethnic group. Before he entered politics, he served in the French Air Force. He rose through the ranks to become a captain. This early experience helped him move into government roles very quickly.

Bongo's path to power began under Gabon's first president, Léon M'ba. After Gabon became independent in 1960, Bongo held several important jobs. He worked in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Presidential Cabinet. In 1964, a coup attempt occurred in Gabon. During this time, M'ba was kidnapped and Bongo was held in a military camp. Eventually, Bongo was named Vice-President in November 1966. When President M'ba died in December 1967, Bongo became the president. He was only 32 years old at that time.

For many years, Bongo led a single-party state. This meant his party, the PDG, was the only one allowed to rule.

In the 1973 election, he was the only candidate. He won with 99.56% of the votes. Some people in Gabon disagreed with his rule. They formed groups like MORENA to ask for change. These groups wanted a multi-party system where people had more choices. However, the government often responded with arrests and strict rules.

In 1990, large protests and strikes forced Bongo to change the rules. He allowed Gabon to have many different political parties again.

Even with more competition, Bongo remained very strong. He won the first multi-party election in 1993 with about 51.4% of the vote. Later, he changed the law to remove limits on how long a president could serve. He won several more elections in 1998 and 2005. By the time he finished his rule, he was the longest-ruling leader in the world who was not a king.

Bongo's time in power is closely linked to Gabon's oil. The country's economy grew because of oil wealth. However, critics said this money mostly helped the leaders and their families.

His government also worked very closely with France. This was partly because French oil companies like Elf and Total worked in Gabon. Bongo died in June 2009. After his death, his son Ali Bongo was elected president in August 2009. This showed how much influence the Bongo family had over the country's history.
