His life was closely tied to the government. He was born in Brazzaville in 1959. His father, Omar Bongo, was a very long-serving president. Omar led Gabon from 1967 until he died in 2009. Ali worked in many high roles during his father's time. He was the Minister of Foreign Affairs from 1989 to 1991. He also served as the Minister of National Defense from 1999 to 2009.

Ali Bongo had a very busy career before becoming president. He studied law at the Sorbonne in France. He even released a funk music album in 1977. In 1981, he joined the Gabonese Democratic Party. He later became a member of the National Assembly. This means he was a representative for his people. He also helped organize a visit by Michael Jackson to Gabon in 1992.

When his father died in 2009, Ali ran for president. He won the election with about 42 percent of the vote.

Some people disagreed with the results of that vote. There were protests and riots in the city of Port-Gentil. Ali Bongo was reelected in 2016. However, that election also had many problems. There were arrests and many reports of human rights violations.
