Ali Bongo Ondimba was a major political figure in the nation of Gabon. He served as the country's third president from 2009 until 2023. His leadership marked the continuation of a long political dynasty. This dynasty began when his father, Omar Bongo, took power in 1967. Omar Bongo remained president until his death in 2009.

Ali Bongo's early life included many different experiences. He was born in Brazzaville in 1959. His parents were Albert-Bernard Bongo and Marie-Joséphine Kama. In 1973, he and his father converted to Islam and changed their names. He later adopted the name Ondimba to honor his grandfather, Basile Ondimba. Bongo was educated at a private school in France. He later studied law at the Sorbonne. He even released a funk music album titled "A Brand New Man" in 1977.

Before becoming president, Bongo held several high-ranking government roles. He joined the Gabonese Democratic Party, known as the PDG, in 1981. He served as the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation from 1989 to 1991. After a constitutional rule changed the minimum age for ministers, he became a Deputy in the National Assembly. He held this seat for many years. In 1999, he was appointed Minister of National Defense. He held this position until his father died in 2009.

Following his father's death in June 2009, Bongo ran for the presidency. He was the candidate chosen by the PDG. The 2009 election was a major turning point for Gabon. Bongo won the election with 42 percent of the vote. The Constitutional Court confirmed this result. However, many people in the opposition rejected the outcome. This led to protests and riots in Port-Gentil, Gabon's second largest city. The court even conducted a recount before declaring him the winner again.

During his first term, Bongo made several changes to the government. He promised to fight corruption and reduce government spending. He fulfilled this by reducing the number of ministers to 30. He also appointed many technocrats to his administration. These are experts trained in specific technical skills. Bongo met with several world leaders during his time in office. He met with U.S. President Barack Obama in 2011. He also met with Hillary Clinton in 2010.

Bongo was reelected to the presidency in 2016. This second term was marked by significant controversy. The election was affected by numerous irregularities. There were reports of arrests and human rights violations. These events led to protests and violence across the country. Despite these issues, he remained in power for several more years. He participated in international events, such as the Illegal Wildlife Trade Conference in 2018.

His presidency ended abruptly in August 2023. After the general election, the military took control of the government. This event is known as a coup d'état. The military claimed there was a lack of transparency in the election process. The coup was led by Bongo's cousin, Brice Oligui Nguema. The military established a junta called the Committee for the Transition and Restoration of Institutions. Bongo was briefly detained but was later released. He became the first Gabonese president who did not die while serving in office.
