Gnassingbé Eyadéma was a leader in Togo.

He was a soldier before he was a politician. He joined the French Army in 1953. Later, he returned to Togo. In 1967, he took power in a military coup. A coup is when the military takes control of a country. Eyadéma became the president. He stayed in power for 38 years. This made him the longest-serving ruler in Africa.

He made many rules to stay in charge. He started a single political party. This meant no other parties could exist. He also had a large cult of personality. This means people were encouraged to treat him like a hero. There were statues of him in the capital city, Lomé.

He even had a comic book. The book showed him with super strength.

In the 1990s, people asked for change. They wanted more than one political party. Eyadéma faced many challenges during this time. He won several elections, but others said they were not fair. He died in 2005. After he died, his son Faure Gnassingbé became the new president.
