Ray went to prison in Tennessee. He pleaded guilty to the crime. He was sentenced to 99 years in jail. Later, Ray said he did not act alone. He told people there was a secret plan. This plan is called a conspiracy. Some people, like the King family, did not believe him. They thought someone else was responsible. Ray stayed in prison for 29 years. He died in 1998 from sickness.
