He drove a white 1966 Ford Mustang for many hours. He tried to avoid main roads so the police would not see him. He traveled to many places like Chicago and Toronto. In Canada, he used a trick to get a fake passport. He pretended to be an official to steal a man's identity. This allowed him to travel to London, England. He hoped to live in a place called Rhodesia.

Ray's history shows a pattern of using fake names. He used the name Eric Starvo Galt while in Alabama and Mexico. He also used the name Harvey Lowmeyer when he bought a rifle. He bought the rifle and a scope in Birmingham, Alabama. He told people he was going on a hunting trip. On April 4, 1968, he was in Memphis. He stayed in a rooming house across from the motel. Investigators found his fingerprints on a rifle left at the scene.

Police finally caught Ray at the London Heathrow Airport.

He was trying to leave the United Kingdom for another country. An airport worker noticed his passport was on a watchlist. Ray was sent back to Tennessee to face trial. In 1969, he pleaded guilty to the crime. This plea meant he did not have a jury trial. He was sentenced to stay in prison for 99 years. He spent 29 years behind bars before he died.

Many people have different ideas about what really happened. Ray later said he did not act alone. He claimed there was a secret plan called a conspiracy. He told some people a man named "Raoul" was involved. The King family did not believe Ray was the only one. They believed a different person might have been responsible. A civil trial in 1999 looked at these claims. That trial concluded that a conspiracy had taken place.
