The gang grew very strong. They used violence to get control. In the 1960s, they moved to San Quentin prison. This led to fights with other groups. A group called Nuestra Familia became their main rival. They fought a big fight called the Shoe War. This happened in 1968.

The gang has many rules. Members must put the gang before their families. They also have a rule called blood-in, blood-out. This means members must hurt someone to join. It also means they can only leave by dying. They use the number 13 as a sign. This is because M is the 13th letter. They also use a black hand symbol.
