The Mexican Mafia is a very powerful criminal group in the United States. It is also called La eMe, which is Spanish for "the M." Even though it has a Mexican name, it did not start in Mexico. Instead, it began inside the California prison system. Law enforcement officials say it is a very dangerous group. Today, it has between 350 and 500 official members. There are also thousands of associates and about 50,000 loyal foot soldiers on the streets.

This group grew by using violence to gain control. In the early days, members wanted to control illegal activities inside prisons. They also wanted to have more comforts while serving time. As members were released from prison, they took control of drug sales in Southern California. They did this by "taxing" drug dealers in those areas. This helped the group expand its power from inside prison walls to the outside world. They use many rules to keep their members in line.

The history of the group began in 1957. Thirteen men from different Los Angeles neighborhoods formed it. They were all at the Deuel Vocational Institution in Tracy, California. One of the founders was Luis "Huero Buff" Flores. He was a member of the Barrio Hawaiian Gardens gang. Flores did something very unusual at the time. He convinced men from rival gangs to stop fighting each other. He wanted them to work together as one group.

As the group grew, it moved to other prisons like San Quentin. This caused many fights with other inmates. In the mid-1960s, a new group called Nuestra Familia was formed. They became the main rivals of the Mexican Mafia. In 1968, a large fight called the "Shoe War" broke out at San Quentin. It started because a member stole a pair of shoes. This battle showed how much the two groups disagreed.

The Mexican Mafia has very strict rules for its members. They have a "blood-in, blood-out" policy. This means a person must hurt someone to join. It also means the only way to leave is through death. Members must put the gang before their own families or religion. They also use specific symbols to show who they are. They often use the number 13 because M is the 13th letter of the alphabet. They also use a black hand symbol and the national symbol of Mexico.
