His life changed a lot in December 1981. On December 9, a police officer named Daniel Faulkner stopped a car. The driver was William Cook, who is Abu-Jamal's younger brother. A physical fight happened between the officer and William. Abu-Jamal was driving a taxi nearby and saw the fight. He ran toward the car to help. During the struggle, Officer Faulkner was shot and killed.

Abu-Jamal was arrested at the scene. Police found a gun near him. He was taken to a hospital and then to a police station.

In 1982, Abu-Jamal went to trial for the murder of Officer Faulkner. The prosecution had four witnesses who said they saw him shoot the officer. They also said he made angry comments at the hospital. The defense argued that Abu-Jamal was innocent. They said the witnesses were not reliable. They also suggested a "running man" might have been the shooter. The jury decided he was guilty. They sentenced him to death.

Many people have had strong feelings about this case for many years. Some people, including politicians and the Faulkner family, say the trial was fair. They believe the evidence showed he was guilty. Other groups and people have criticized the trial very much. They say there were mistakes in how the trial was handled. In 2001, a federal court overturned his death sentence. In 2011, a new agreement gave him a sentence of life in prison without parole.
