His journey as a writer began in a very special way. He grew up in Birmingham, England. His parents had moved there from the Caribbean. When he was a child, he received an old manual typewriter. This gift inspired him to start writing. He had a hard time in school because of dyslexia. This is a condition that makes reading and writing difficult. However, he taught himself and became a very successful author.

Zephaniah was also a talented musician and performer. In 1982, he released an album called Rasta. This album was a tribute to Nelson Mandela. It was so popular that it topped the music charts in Yugoslavia. Because of this success, Mandela invited him to host a concert in 1996. This concert took place at the Royal Albert Hall in London. He also acted in many television shows. One of his big roles was in the drama Peaky Blinders.

Beyond his art, Zephaniah was a person who stood up for his beliefs. He was a vegan and an animal rights activist. He became a vegan at age 13 to protect animals. He also spoke up against racism in Britain. In 2003, he was offered an OBE honor from the government. He chose to say no to this honor. He felt the word "empire" reminded him of a very difficult history. He wanted to stay true to his own values and his community.
