Jack Mapanje is a famous writer and poet from Malawi. He was born on March 25, 1944, in Kadango Village. His parents were Nyanja and Yao. Jack is known for his powerful words and his study of language. He used his writing to share important ideas about his home. People value him because he stayed true to his beliefs. He showed how art can speak even when things are hard.

Jack worked as a teacher and a scholar. He studied at the University of London to learn about education. Later, he went to University College, London, to study linguistics. Linguistics is the study of how people use language. He became the head of English at Chancellor College. This was the main campus for the University of Malawi. He also led the Department of Language and Linguistics.

In 1981, Jack published a book of poems. The title was Of Chameleons and Gods. He used the chameleon to describe politics in his country. A chameleon changes its color to hide or blend in. Jack used this idea to talk about leaders. He wrote about the government of President Hastings Banda. His writing was indirect so he could express his views.

Because of his poems, Jack was sent to prison in 1987. He was held without a charge for three and a half years. The government withdrew his book from circulation. Many people around the world fought for his freedom. Amnesty International called him a prisoner of conscience. The Nobel laureate Harold Pinter read Jack's poems in London. Jack also won the 1990 PEN/Barbara Goldsmith Freedom to Write Award.

Jack was finally released from jail in 1991. He moved to the United Kingdom to live and work. He became a fellow at The University of York. He also taught at Leeds University. Jack even taught creative writing to people in prisons. He wrote a memoir called And Crocodiles Are Hungry At Night. This book tells the story of his life and his experiences.
