He learned many different ways to write during his life. He studied at several colleges in the United States. These included UCLA, the University of Oregon, and the University of Wisconsin–Madison. He learned styles from French and Latin American books. Then, he brought these new ideas back to Sierra Leone. He wanted to share these different ways of telling stories. This helped make his writing very unique and special.

In 1990, he published a very big novel. It is called The Last Harmattan of Alusine Dunbar. This book tells the whole history of a made-up land named Malagueta. This land is similar to Sierra Leone or Liberia. The story uses a style called magical realism. This is when magic happens in a real world. Some people say his main character has mysterious powers.
