Ben Okri is a famous poet and novelist from Nigeria. He is known as one of the most important African authors today. His writing often explores deep ideas about what is real. People sometimes call his work postmodern or magical realism. However, Okri prefers to say his stories follow a "dream logic." He believes our world has many different layers. These layers include legends, myths, and even spirits. He wants readers to see that reality is not just what we see with our eyes.

Okri's writing process is shaped by his own life stories. He grew up in a culture where people spoke of seeing spirits. He also lived through a difficult civil war in Nigeria. These experiences gave him many ideas for his fiction. When he was 14, he realized that poetry was his true calling. He started by writing short stories and articles. Even when he faced hard times, like being homeless in England, he kept writing. He said that those difficult years actually made his desire to write even stronger.
