Many writers from Nigeria share their thoughts through books. Some use English, which is the most common language for these authors. Others write in beautiful national languages like Yoruba, Igbo, Hausa, Urhobo, or Nupe. These stories matter because they show the many faces of Nigerian life. They can be magical, historical, or about real people today. Writing helps people connect with their own culture and history.

Authors use many different ways to tell their tales. Some write books that feel like fairy tales. For example, Amos Tutuola wrote The Palm Wine Drinkard in 1952. It follows a man into a magical world of ghosts and demons. Other writers use plays to perform stories on a stage. John Pepper Clark-Bekederemo staged his first play, Song of a Goat, in 1962. He even used the original language of the Ijaw people for his drama Ozidi. Some stories are even shared in small booklets at local markets.

History has shaped the many voices found in Nigerian books. During British rule, authors like Amos Tutuola began to write modern stories. After Nigeria gained independence, groups like the Mbari Club became important centers for writers. These writers wanted to make sure theater felt like real African life. Later, many books dealt with the hard times of the Biafra war. Flora Nwapa wrote about these years in her book Never Again in 1975. These stories help us understand how the world has changed over time.

Many Nigerian writers have won the world's biggest prizes.
