The Igbo are one of the largest ethnic groups in Africa. Most Igbo people live in modern-day Nigeria. They live in states like Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, and Imo.

Some also live in Cameroon, Gabon, and Equatorial Guinea. They speak the Igbo language, which belongs to the Niger-Congo family. This group has a very deep and rich history. Their story involves ancient art, unique ways of governing, and many changes over time.

In the past, Igbo communities had a special way of living together. Most towns used a democratic system of government. This meant that common people helped make decisions through a council of elders.

This was different from many other lands where a single king ruled everyone. While some places like Onitsha had kings called Obi, many others were more equal. This system helped ensure that citizens had a voice in their own lives.

Archaeologists have found amazing things that show how skilled the Igbo were long ago. At a site called Igbo-Ukwu, people found over 600 beautiful objects.

These included complex bronze sculptures and more than 165,000 glass beads. Some of these beads were made using plant ash.

Another important group was the Kingdom of Nri. This was a religious state where a priest-king called the Eze Nri provided spiritual guidance. The Nri influence in the region may go back as far as the 9th century.

Igbo culture includes many smart systems that people still use today. They have a traditional calendar with 13 months and 52 weeks. This calendar helps people know when market days happen.

They also use a banking system for saving and loans called Isusu. For writing, they used a set of symbols called Nsibidi.

Even their math is seen in games like Okwe. These traditions show how organized their society has always been.

History brought many big changes to the Igbo people in the 20th century. During the era of British colonial rule, many people became Christian.

After Nigeria became independent in 1960, there were many tensions. This led to the Nigerian Civil War from 1967 to 1970. During this time, a group tried to start a new country called Biafra.

Eventually, Biafra was defeated and became part of Nigeria again. Today, the Igbo people maintain a very strong sense of who they are.
